Artistic Statement
I paint in oils on canvas. All my work is
based on drawings. The subjects I choose represent a challenge
in terms of balancing the planes, the spaces and the light. I
often return again and again to the same subjects and have
drawers full of sketches and drawings that I will never part
with. They are the foundation of my work in both paintings and
prints.
Colour and light, shape and form initially
catch my attention, almost in an abstract sense; a small detail,
one colour against another, or the contrast of light and shadow;
the curve of an arch, the profile of a window or a doorway -
often unnoticed until the light picks it out.
From the initial drawing I simplify the
essential details. Several drawings are required before I feel I
really understand the subject sufficiently to return to my
studio to paint.
Many of the themes of my paintings are also
explored in prints - mostly etchings and lino-cuts. You will
find examples in Works.
